Ajax Wyatt Furnace Working Principle

Ajax Wyatt furnace is an improved form of direct core type induction furnace. Ajax Wyatt furnace removes all the defects mentioned in the induction heating furnace.

Ajax Wyatt furnace employs a vertical crucible instead of horizontal furnace for the charge.

It has an iron core similar to a 3 phase transformer. The principle of operation of induction heating furnace is the same as that of transformer action. Here, the only difference is that secondary winding is replaced by a closed loop of molten metal.

Primary is an inductor coil wound on central limb of the laminated core which concentrates the magnetic flux.

Therefore, heat is generated in the charge by the action of heavy induced currents which flow in the channel of molten metal situated between an inductor coil and furnace lining.

Molten metal in the V portion acts as a short circuit secondary coil. Reversing magnetic field links with this molten metal causes the circulation of induced currents.

Therefore, heat is mainly generated in the V section and is rapidly distributed to the metal by convection. The stirring action takes place by the electromagnetic process.

Since the V channel is narrow, a small quantity of charge is sufficient to keep the secondary circuit closed. Hence, the chances of discontinuity of the circuit are less.

Drawbacks Of Ajax Wyatt Furnace

  • Aluminium and alloys containing aluminium are difficult metals to melt in the Ajax Wyatt furnace, it is because any aluminium oxide formed tends to adhere to the walls of the V channel.
  • These are rapidly built up to such an extent, such that the furnace can no longer be operated.

  • The standard size of these furnaces ranges from 60 to 300 KW.
  • Supply is single phase, 501 Hz for standard up to 600V
  • This type of furnace is suitable only for continuous operations.
  • These furnaces are widely used for melting and refining or brass and other heavy non-ferrous metals.
  • Its efficiency is about 75%.
