**Leakage flux**

It is that flux which does not follow its intended or desired path in a magnetic circuit. The flux in the air gap is called useful flux.

Leakage flux = Total flux – Useful flux

**Magnetic Leakage**

**Leakage flux is that part of total flux which follows an unintended path. Since it is difficult to predict the amount of leakage and its leakage path exactly, the leakage flux serves no useful work. Leakage flux is represented by leakage factor** :

**Magnetic Fringing**

The useful flux present in the air gap tends to bulge out, thereby increasing the effective area of the gap and reducing the flux density in the gap. This effect is called as fringing. As seen from figure, longer the air gap, greater will be the fringing effect.
